Hypro-Sorb R is sterile pure native 99.9% crystalline bioabsorbable bovine atelocollagen. Hypro-Sorb R is indicated for the control of capillary and parenchymatous bleeding in surgery, dentistry and traumatology, as well as an ancillary aid to other haemostatic techniques. Atelocollagen is a name given to collagen that has been freed from telopeptides which fulfil the function of antigenic determinants while preserving its quasi-crystalline structure, i.e., regularly arranged triple helical conformation. Assets of this material include the highest degree of biocompatibility, excellent tolerance by the live tissue and resorbability after implantation.
WHY IS IT USED?
Surgery, dentistry and traumatology often have to cope with extensive capillary bleeding such as during spleen or liver injuries; following tooth extraction; or with extensive skin erosions or bleeding from surfaces which are appreciably supplied with blood, such as from the nose or from superficially injured eyelids, etc. In such cases, the availability of suitable haemostatic devices is vital. Haemostatics made of atelocollagen are the most efficient known devices used to stop capillary bleeding.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF ATELOCOLLAGEN HAEMOSTATICS?
Collagen haemostatics will effectively stop capillary bleeding. However, disadvantages of collagen materials include immune reaction of an organism to foreign collagen and inflammatory reaction. Atelocollagen has reduced the contents of antigenic determinants and is excellently tolerated. Atelocollagen inhibits serine proteinase; therefore, it has a mild bacteriostatic effect. Inflammatory reaction is either very mild or not present. Hypro-Sorb R haemostatics do not support microbial growth and can be used in infected wounds or in medically compromised patients. Atelocollagen implants retain their compactness and effectiveness for two to three weeks. Then they are quickly resorbed during the fourth week after implantation. Other collagen materials known to date are gradually resorbed from the moment of implantation owing to the slight inflammation reaction; therefore, their haemostatic or mechanic effectiveness decreases faster.
Blood is a suspension of various cells in blood plasma. The cells are very diverse because they have many different functions. These include hydrolytic enzymes preventing blood coagulation, as well as other enzymes whose function, on the contrary, is to support coagulation and stop any bleeding. The latter process, known as haemostasis, is controlled by a cascade of mutually affecting steps which remove locally the enzymatic barrier to blood coagulation in non-damaged blood vessels. Hypro-Sorb R activates a cascade of native coagulation factors in blood in an entirely natural manner. Hypro-Sorb has a specific activity to thrombocytes and releases clotting factors, which together with plasma binding factors promote fibrinogenesis. Hypro-Sorb R accelerates the entire process of bleed stopping and reduces the loss of blood.

HOW IS IT USED AND HOW FAST WILL IT STOP BLEEDING?
Hypro-Sorb R is applied usually with its smooth side onto the wound surface, softly pressed down and left on the wound until the fibrine adhesion develops. Bleeding usually stops in two to five minutes; it lasts longer in haemophiliacs. Usually it is used in dry state but it may also be moistened with sterile saline.

CAN IT BE LEFT IN THE BODY AND FAST IS IT BIORESORBED?
Hypro-Sorb R may be left in situ whenever necessary. However, the surgeon, at his or her discretion, should remove any excess of Hypro-Sorb R prior to wound closure. In studies, most of Hypro-Sorb R was found to be resorbed in 2 - 4 weeks after implantation.
